Langeveld is one of those places that draws you back time and again as a photographer. This small but rich nature reserve, situated between Noordwijkerhout and the coast, has something magical about it in May. The trees are in full leaf, the hawthorn blooms white and fragrant, and if you are lucky, you might come face to face with a fallow deer.

I was lucky today.

The fallow deer looks back

Deep in the forest, between the beech trunks, he suddenly stopped. A young fallow deer, his antlers still in the velvety phase — soft and round, not yet without the sharp points of the adult buck. He looked at me. I looked at him. Neither of us moved.

These are the moments why I am a photographer. No tourists, no noise — just the light filtering through the treetops and this beautiful animal letting you into its world.

Hawthorn in bloom

Along the sandy paths of Langeveld, the hawthorn stands in full bloom. Clusters of white blossoms against a backdrop of fresh green — a combination that is almost too beautiful to be true. The scent hangs heavy in the air, sweet and spicy at the same time.

For photographers, the hawthorn is a rewarding subject. The white blossoms contrast beautifully with the soft bokeh of the trees in the background.

The dandelion after the rain

After a short rain shower, the drops still lie on everything — even on this spent dandelion I came across along the path. Captured with my macro lens: every drop a mirror, every fluff a work of art in itself. This is macro photography at its best — the small world made big.
