The Jordaan – The Soul of Amsterdam

The Jordaan is more than just history – it is a feeling. As a born and raised Amsterdam photographer, I know this neighbourhood like the back of my hand. I regularly cycle through its charming streets with my camera, searching for that perfect light in a narrow alley, the reflection of a canal, or the iconic Westerkerk tower rising above the rooftops.

A Neighbourhood with a Rich History

The Jordaan was created during Amsterdam’s major expansion in the early 17th century as a district for workers and immigrants. Protestant Flemings, Spanish and Portuguese Jews and French Huguenots settled here in large numbers. Famous residents also found their way to the Jordaan. Writer Joost van den Vondel and painter Rembrandt van Rijn moved to the neighbourhood during less prosperous periods of their lives because of the affordable rents.

Although part of the Jordaan’s traditional character has disappeared over the years, you can still experience the atmosphere of old Amsterdam while wandering through its picturesque streets and canals.

Music, Nostalgia and the Westerkerk

The Jordaan is inseparable from Amsterdam’s traditional folk music. Legendary singers such as Johnny Jordaan, Tante Leen, Willy Alberti and Manke Nelis celebrated the neighbourhood and its famous Westerkerk in their songs, making the Jordaan known throughout the Netherlands. That sense of nostalgia is still present today as you walk through its intimate streets and hidden courtyards.

For me, the Jordaan is an endless source of inspiration. The combination of historic canal houses, intimate alleyways, colourful facades and the ever-present Westerkerk tower makes every photograph unique.

Whether it is early in the morning when the city is still asleep, or on a rainy autumn day when the wet cobblestones reflect the lights, the Jordaan always offers something special.
