Discover Amsterdam’s most impressive contemporary architecture and explore exclusive fine art photography of the city’s iconic modern landmarks.

Amsterdam is famous for its historic canals and centuries-old architecture, but over the past few decades the city has also become home to some of Europe’s most striking contemporary buildings. Along the IJ waterfront, in the Zuidas business district and across newly developed neighbourhoods, innovative architecture has transformed Amsterdam’s skyline.

As a photographer, I have always been fascinated by this modern side of the city. Clean lines, dramatic perspectives, reflections and bold geometric shapes create images that are both powerful and timeless. In this article, I take you on a journey past some of Amsterdam’s most remarkable modern buildings.

Valley: A Vertical City

Valley is undoubtedly one of Amsterdam’s most spectacular buildings. Designed by the renowned Dutch architecture firm MVRDV, its three towers are connected by terraces filled with trees and plants, creating the appearance of a vertical landscape.

From a photographer’s perspective, Valley is endlessly fascinating. Every angle reveals a different composition, while changing light conditions create new reflections throughout the day. Looking up from street level transforms the building into an almost abstract work of art.

Sluishuis: Architecture Floating Above the Water

Located in the IJburg district, Sluishuis is one of Amsterdam’s newest architectural landmarks. Its striking opening gives the illusion that part of the building is suspended above the water.

Whether photographed during daylight or at blue hour, Sluishuis offers endless opportunities for minimalist compositions, reflections and dramatic architectural photography.

Eye Filmmuseum: An Icon on the Waterfront

The Eye Filmmuseum has become one of Amsterdam’s most recognisable contemporary buildings. Its sharp white lines and futuristic design create a striking contrast with the waters of the IJ.

During the evening, when the city lights begin to reflect on the water, the building becomes even more photogenic and beautifully complements the nearby A’DAM Tower.

The A’DAM Tower

Standing directly opposite Amsterdam Central Station, the A’DAM Tower has become one of the city’s modern landmarks.

Together with the Eye Filmmuseum, it forms one of Amsterdam’s most recognisable waterfront views. At sunset and during blue hour, the reflections on the IJ create spectacular photographic opportunities.

NEMO Science Museum

Designed by world-famous architect Renzo Piano, NEMO Science Museum resembles the bow of a giant ship emerging from the water.

Its unusual shape offers a completely different appearance depending on the viewing angle, making it one of the city’s most rewarding buildings to photograph.

REM Island

Originally built as an offshore broadcasting platform in the North Sea, REM Island now stands along Amsterdam’s waterfront as one of the city’s most unique architectural landmarks.

Its industrial character combined with its fascinating history makes it a favourite subject for architectural photography.

Symphony: Lines, Glass and Perspective

Not every impressive building has to be world-famous. The Symphony building demonstrates how contemporary architecture can become almost abstract through photography.

By looking straight up, the building transforms into a composition of glass, steel and geometric lines, creating images that blur the boundary between architecture and graphic art.

Why Architecture Photography Makes Beautiful Wall Art

Architecture photography fits perfectly into contemporary interiors. Clean compositions, strong lines and minimalist design make these photographs ideal for modern homes, offices, meeting rooms and reception areas.

Each building tells its own story, resulting in wall art that combines architectural beauty with timeless elegance.
