Amsterdam is a city of a thousand faces, but nowhere does the soul of the capital emerge as purely as in black-and-white photography. Without the distraction of color, the iconic stepped gables, the reflection of the canals, and the characteristic lines of the Westertoren truly become tangible. The result? A work of art that radiates tranquility and makes a powerful statement in any interior—from sleek modern to warm classic.

Whether you are a born Amsterdammer looking to bring the city into your home, or searching for that one perfect memory of a misty morning in the Jordaan, the right print can completely transform a room.

In this article, I take you through my personal Top 5 favorite Amsterdam cityscapes. I show you how these images come to life in various interiors and give you tips on materials that best showcase the city’s contrast.

Watch along and discover which piece of Amsterdam fits perfectly on your wall.

Luxury black-and-white photo of the iconic corner building on Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht in Amsterdam

1. The icon of the canal belt: Where the Brouwersgracht and Prinsengracht merge

There is hardly a place in Amsterdam that summarizes the history of the city as powerfully as this striking corner building. Situated at the intersection of the Brouwersgracht and the Prinsengracht, this architectural masterpiece forms the beating heart of the canal belt.

In this black-and-white version, the character of the stepped gables and the robust bricks truly comes to life. The dramatic cloudy sky creates a beautiful contrast with the clean lines of the building, giving the photo an almost cinematic quality. It is an image that not only fills the space but also tells a story of centuries-old trade and the unmistakable Amsterdam allure.

Styling tip: Thanks to the dynamic angle of the photo, this image works fantastically on a large wall. Choose a version on aluminum (dibond) for a rugged, industrial look that further emphasizes the deep black tones in the sky.

2. Rhythm on the Prinsengracht: The soul of the Jordaan in a single image

Where the first photo revolves around architectural power, this image revolves around the pure ‘living experience’ of Amsterdam. Here we are looking at an iconic row of canal houses on the Prinsengracht, photographed from the opposite side near the Jordaan.

What makes this image so special is the rhythm. The succession of the various stepped and gable facades forms a graphic pattern that only becomes truly visible in black and white. The houseboats in the foreground add an extra layer; they remind us that the canals are not merely a backdrop, but a living place where people live and work. The reflection in the rippling water creates a softness that contrasts beautifully with the hard lines of the buildings.

This is one of my personal favorites because it exudes a sense of tranquility. While the city rushes around you, this panorama offers a moment of reflection.

Styling tip: Due to its horizontal, panoramic character, this is the ideal photo for above a wide piece of furniture, such as a sideboard or a sleek designer sofa. In a light room, this image is best showcased on plexiglass, as the depth effect and details in the white cloud formation are then optimally displayed.

Vertical black-and-white photography of the Westertoren with the characteristic lamppost and bicycles along the canal.

3. The Westertoren in Portrait: A vertical tribute to ‘De Oude Wester’

Sometimes a subject calls for a different perspective. While Amsterdam is often captured horizontally, the Westertoren forces you to look up. In this vertical shot, we have captured the ‘Amsterdam trinity’: the iconic lamppost, the inevitable bicycles along the canal, and, of course, the proud tower rising above the Jordaan.

Choosing this perspective creates a beautiful layering. Your eye wanders from the details of the bicycles in the foreground, past the lamppost, to the impressive architecture of the church. In black and white, the tower takes on an almost monumental status. It is an image that evokes nostalgia for early Sunday mornings, when the city is still asleep and only the bells of the Westerkerk can be heard.

Styling tip: This vertical format is a ‘life saver’ for those tricky, narrow walls in the house where a horizontal piece won’t fit. It also works excellently as part of a gallery wall, where you combine this black-and-white image with smaller prints or personal photos.

4. The Secret of the Jordan: Depth and Perspective

This view literally draws you into the city. We are standing here in one of the characteristic side streets of the Prinsengracht (such as the Egelantiersstraat), where the narrow cobblestone streets serve as a perfect leading line towards the Westertoren.

What makes this photo so special is the texture. The wet cobblestones gleam subtly and reflect the limited light, giving the photo a tangible atmosphere. You can almost feel the history of the Jordaan in the slightly crooked facades flanking the street. It is an intimate image; it feels less like a tourist postcard and more like a hidden discovery made during a walk through the neighborhood.

Styling tip: Because this photo has tremendous depth, you can use it to visually enlarge a room. On a dark wall (such as an anthracite or deep blue wall), the white accents in the sky and on the street really pop, creating a luxurious, gallery-like look.

5. The Ultimate Panorama: A Statement on the Wall

Sometimes a standard format is not enough to capture the grandeur of the Amsterdam canals. For this final image in my Top 5, I chose a sweeping panorama of the iconic façade along the Prinsengracht. In this format, the rhythm of the city truly comes into its own: from the smallest stepped gable to the most stately neck gable, everything flows seamlessly into one another.

What makes this panorama so powerful in black and white is the tranquility it exudes despite the enormous amount of detail. It is an image you keep looking at; every time, you discover a new Amsterdam detail in the reflection of the water or the cloud formation above.

Styling tip: As you can see in this mock-up, a panoramic format is the perfect solution for the space above a large lounge sofa or a long dining table. It fills the wall without making the room feel ‘cluttered’. For a modern, gallery-like look, I recommend this image on aluminum (dibond) with a matte finish, so you won’t be bothered by glare on the glass.

Bring the soul of Amsterdam into your home

A photograph is more than just an image on the wall; it is a window to a city that never gets boring. Whether you fall for the powerful lines of a corner building on the Brouwersgracht or the intimate tranquility of a hidden street in the Jordaan, each of these images brings a unique piece of Amsterdam history into your interior.

All my works are carefully captured and available in various sizes and materials, from rugged aluminium to museum-worthy fine art paper. This way, we always find the version that perfectly suits your personal style and living space.
