The Rijksmuseum – A Palace for Art
For more than 140 years, the Rijksmuseum has been one of Amsterdam’s greatest landmarks. Designed by architect Pierre Cuypers and opened in 1885, the building itself is as impressive as the masterpieces it houses. Visitors from around the world come here to admire Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s delicate interiors and centuries of Dutch art and history.
Yet even before stepping inside, the museum makes an unforgettable impression. Its grand façade, elegant towers and richly decorated brickwork reveal why the Rijksmuseum is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful museum buildings.

The Museum Square – Amsterdam’s Open-Air Living Room
Museumplein is far more than the space between Amsterdam’s famous museums. It is a place where locals and visitors come together throughout the year. Children cool off in the fountains during summer, runners and cyclists cross the square every day, while autumn transforms the surrounding trees into a sea of gold.
With the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Royal Concertgebouw all within a few minutes’ walk, Museumplein has become Amsterdam’s cultural meeting place.

The World’s Most Beautiful Museum Library
Hidden behind the galleries of the Rijksmuseum lies one of Amsterdam’s greatest architectural treasures: the Cuypers Library.
Completed together with the museum in 1885, it is the oldest and largest art history library in the Netherlands. Elegant cast-iron galleries, a soaring glass roof and thousands of historic volumes create an atmosphere that feels untouched by time.
Few visitors realise this extraordinary space exists, making it one of Museumplein’s best-kept secrets.

Walking Through History
Most museums ask visitors to walk around them. The Rijksmuseum is one of the few in the world where pedestrians and cyclists pass straight through the building.
This historic passage connects Amsterdam’s canal district with Museumplein and has become one of the city’s most recognisable routes. Every day thousands of people cross beneath Pierre Cuypers’ magnificent arches.
One of my photographs taken here has been viewed more than 2.6 million times on Google Maps, illustrating just how iconic this remarkable passage has become.

More Than Museums
Museumplein is not only defined by the Rijksmuseum. The nearby Van Gogh Museum, the striking modern architecture of the Stedelijk Museum and the world-famous Royal Concertgebouw together create one of Europe’s richest cultural districts.
Whether you come for art, architecture or music, this is where Amsterdam’s creative spirit comes together.

The City Behind the Photographs
Museumplein may be the cultural heart of Amsterdam, but it is only one chapter in the story of this remarkable city. From the peaceful canals of the Jordaan and the grandeur of the Canal Belt to the medieval streets of Old Amsterdam and the vibrant waterfront of NDSM Wharf, every neighbourhood reveals a different side of Amsterdam.
Over the years I have explored these places in every season, searching for the perfect light, quiet moments and unexpected perspectives. Those experiences have become the collection of photographs you discover throughout FotoAmsterdam.
Whether you’re planning your next walk through the city or looking for fine art to bring Amsterdam into your home, I invite you to continue exploring.
